Frequently asked questions - and answers

Winterisation

Q. What tips can you give us when we leave our caravan whilst it is not being used during the winter?

Q. What steps should we consider to set up again ready for use to ensure a smooth holiday?

A. Caravans may be used all year round but when not in use, even for short periods, your caravan will need to be winterised – one night of freezing temperatures could cause expensive damage to components.

Water system

The water heater must be drained – depending on what type of heater you have the drain plug valve is located either externally by the bottom corner of the heater or under the bed locker next to the water heater. When the plug is removed or the valve opened the water heater should then empty.

Remove taps or spouts and shower heads, open all taps, remove filter if fitted. The submersible pump should be stored in a dry place.

Cassette Toilet

The top tank should be drained (the drain point is normally inside the external door).

Storing the caravan

Remove all linen, blankets, etc. Open all cupboard/locker doors. Ensure all rooflights and windows are shut. Check fixed ventilation points are not obstructed. If possible, store caravan with handbrake off – if this is not possible release it at regular intervals.

Setting up the caravan

Water system

  • Replace all drain valves
  • Replace showerheads/tap spouts
  • Close all taps
  • Check all plumbing connections
  • It is recommended at this point to sterilise your water container and flush the system with sterilising fluid.
  • If you have a filter, replace after flushing

Remember: frost damage cannot be claimed under warranty!

Buying a Caravan

Q. There are so many issues when deciding on which caravan to buy with so much choice; what should we consider when making that choice?

Some changes to consider when changing caravans

  • What size are the wheels on your new caravan? Will your wheel clamp still fit?
  • What hitch head has your new caravan got? Will your hitch lock fit?
  • Will your new water pump fit into your existing water carrier?
  • What diameter is your new waste pipe outlet?
  • Remember, if you are purchasing a used caravan then keep your gas regulator.

Basic equipment needed when buying a new tourer

  • Fresh water container
  • Waste water container
  • Gas bottle (butane or propane)
  • Leisure battery
  • Stabiliser (unless already fitted - e.g. AKS or Winterhoff)
  • Wheel clamp and hitch lock (often the minimum requirements for caravan insurance)

Basic equipment needed when buying a used tourer

  • As above plus...
  • Mains lead
  • Step
  • Spare wheel & tyre
  • Gas regulator and spanner

Don't forget your car!

  • Tow bar with (preferably twin) electrics
  • Extension driving mirrors
